Evo is seeking an IT Solutions Architect for our downtown Portland Client. The IT Solution Architect (SA) reports to the Divisional CIO for Smart Grid Operations and is responsible for leading the information technology architecture function including infrastructure, cloud, platforms, products, applications, integration, security and user experience for the client's Integrated Grid initiative and for the Smart Grid Division. The key area of responsibility will be providing leadership on both strategic and tactical issues facing the Integrated Grid Initiative, so that economies of scale, shared thought processes, architectural approach and intellectual capital are realized. This contract opportunity is scheduled to be 1-year.

  • Work with key technology and business leaders to establish and ensure consistent, disciplined use of technologies, including goals, policies, standards and priorities across the initiative
  • Drive the organization's targeted business outcomes through the choice of technology programs, projects and initiatives
    • Apply existing, new and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating models
    • Monetize and operationalize new technologies
  • Foster linkage between application development, infrastructure and data, while employing SaaS, IaaS, APIs, microservices and analytics to deliver business value
  • Lead analysis of the IT environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommend solutions for improvement
    • Provide perspective on the readiness of the organization to change and innovate
  • Research and Understand Technology and Nontechnology Trends within the Integrated Grid
    • Scan the world for major disruptive technology and nontechnology trends (trendspotting) that affect business
    • Provide practical advice and best practices to overcome these challenges and successfully deliver the expected business outcomes
  • Ensure communication of architecture issues, training, events, standards, policies and overall architecture strategy
    • Execute functional business plans and contribute to the development of functional strategies.
  • Proactively and holistically lead responses to disruptive forces by identifying and analyzing the execution of change toward the desired business vision and targeted outcomes
  • Improve total cost of ownership via the implementation of an improved architecture strategy that enables identification of issues very early in the development process
    • Work closely with the business units to develop plans for the rationalization of systems to reduce cost and improve effectiveness
  • Decisions are guided by company strategy and objectives
  • Works closely with the Overall Program Manager, the Smart Grid Operations IT organization, and leadership and SME's from business units involved in the initiative to design the to-be technical landscape for the Integrated Grid Initiative, including interim technical landscapes that build towards the project s end-state
  • Evaluate and document the as-is Integrated Grid technologies supporting current efforts, their interactions, data flows, and integrations
    • Integrating recommendations from software vendors, consultants, and peer utilities, SA will recommend solutions, sequencing, and implementation strategies that lower the overall NPV of the initiative, optimize delivery, reduce execution risk, and align the impacts to employees with the client's overall Integrated Grid timelines and business value
  • SA will demonstrate deep understanding of Integrated Grid business operations and the requirements of the various Integrated Grid initiatives and the business units that they support
    • SA will translate business objectives into the solutions that they design
  • SA will identify opportunities to use out-of-the-box functionality and business processes that cost-effectively deliver business benefits while avoiding unnecessary technical work such as customizations
  • Lead the management of the Initiative's Requirements Traceability Matrix (RTM), relating vendor software, estimates of labor, and any objects to be developed to specific business value to be delivered by the Integrated Grid Initiative
    • Responsible for developing a process and methodology for updating the RTM on a periodic basis, reconciling changes to requirements, solutions, or estimating assumptions
  • Evaluate the Integrated Grid Initiative and recommend ways that the client can leverage technology to meet the business benefits of the Integrated Grid Initiative, ensure business results and improve internal and external customer experiences
    • This includes infrastructure changes, architecture initiatives and rationalization of applications, as well as integration of cybersecurity and IT platforms
    • The overarching purpose of this role is to build a forward-looking blueprint for technology, focusing on innovation and process improvement, while delivering actionable recommendations to help the company achieve its business objectives through optimized digital architecture
  • Responsible for adhering to the client's Enterprise Architecture (EA) processes, review and advisory protocols, and for leading the integration of those processes with the Integrated Grid Initiative
  • Develops and enacts a strategy that is innovative while utilizing cost-effective, pragmatic approaches in the use of technology to solve business problems and enable future-state business capabilities
    • Drives the organization's targeted business outcomes through the choice of programs, projects and initiatives the organization chooses to invest in
    • Practically applies existing, new and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating models
    • Monetizes and operationalizes new technologies
  • A minimum of 15 years of IT experience and three or more years of solution architecture experience
  • Five or more years of experience in at least three disciplines, such as business, information, solution or technical architecture, application development, middleware, information analysis, database management or operations in a multitier environment
  • Advanced knowledge in the information technology and information systems field, and an emphasis on distributed systems, systems architecture, cloud and new technology initiatives
  • Basic knowledge of electrical distribution, transmission and generation facilities
  • Advanced knowledge of the following utility-specific applications:
    • Geospatial Information System (GIS)
    • Outage Management (OMS)
    • Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS)
    • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
    • Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
    • Fault Location, Isolation, and restoration (FLISR) technologies
  • A track record of building and delivering technology and strategy solutions within infrastructure, applications, data and technology disciplines, ideally gained in a large, complex business in an information-rich environment where technology is an enabler
  • Master's or Bachelor's degree in business, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, system analysis or a related field of study, or equivalent experience
  • Familiarity with information management practices, system development life cycle management, IT services management, infrastructure and operations, and EA and ITIL frameworks
  • Knowledge of business ecosystems, SaaS, infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), SOA, APIs, open data, microservices, event-driven IT and predictive analytics
  • Exposure and understanding of existing, new and emerging technologies, and processing environments
  • Knowledge of all components of holistic enterprise architecture
  • Knowledge of business engineering principles and processes
  • Familiarity with basic graphical modeling approaches, tools and model repositories
  • Consistent use of logic or scientific thinking to define problems, collect information, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
